CLAs were first found in 1979, when medical researchers from the University of Wisconsin found the lesser number of tumors in mice injected with a beef extract in addition to exposure to a potent carcinogen, in comparison with mice exposed to only the carcinogen. Short-Term Effectiveness

Two 12-week studies reveal that CLA may be effective in the short term for reducing body fat mass in humans. The first 12-week study published in 2000 in “The Journal of Nutrition” discovered that CLA may decrease body fat mass in humans when used at a dose of 3.4 grams per day. This study also shows that doses higher than this appeared to have no extra effect on weight loss. Another study published in “Nutrition” in 2012 discovered that grade 1 obese Chinese subjects lost weight over a 3-month period utilizing CLA, with no apparent adverse effects.

In a study conducted by Dr. Jean-Michel Gaullier, adults given a CLA supplement recorded a 9 percent decrease in body fat, according to the Nutraingredients website. The study also recorded that CLA was well tolerated.

The April 2005 “Journal of Nutrition” covered a study, conducted by Scandinavian Clinical Research, in which men and women consumed 3.4 g of CLA over a 12-month period. Upon completion of the 12-month test period, individuals showed a greater decrease in body fat composition in comparison to those consuming an olive oil-enhanced placebo.
